Dr. Bharat Babu Shrestha
Lecturer
Ecology and Resource Management
Research Interests:
My research interests include forest ecology (regeneration, vegetation dynamics, biodiversity conservation in community managed forests), plant ecophysiology (phenology, water relations, ecological anatomy), conservation biology (medicinal plants) and plant invasion ecology.
Education
· Ph D in Botany. 2010. Tribhuvan University. Title of dissertation: Ecology and Phytochemistry of Two Medicinal Plants of in Central Nepal. Supervisors: Prof. Dr. Pramod Kumar Jha and Prof. Dr. Mohan Bikram Gewali
· M. Sc in Botany. 1999. Tribhuvan Universtiy, Nepal
Teaching and Research Experiences
I have been teaching ecology at Central Department of Botany since 2001, first as teaching assistant (2001-2005) and then lecturer (since 2005). The courses includes ecophysiology, mountain ecology, population ecology, biometry, wetland ecology, forest ecology, etc. I was involved in research projects funded by National Science Foundation, USA (water relations studies of tree species); Volks-Wagen Foundation, Germany (bioprospecting of ethnomedicinal plants), EVK2-CNR, Italy (surface water quality in Sagarmatha National park), University Grants Commissions, Nepal (regeneration and resource utilizations in community managed forests), and Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (impact of invasion of Parthenium hysterophorus to grasslands in urban areas of Nepal). I have supervised research works of ten M. Sc. theses.
Current Research Project:
Biodiversity conservation in community forest of Nepal: a case study of Dhading district. (Funding: University Grants Commission, Nepal; duration: Jan 2010-June 2011).
Professional Involvement:
· Managing Editor, Himalayan Journal of Sciences, Himalayan Association for Advancement of Science (HimAAS), Lalitpur, Nepal
Award and Scholarship
· Young and Deserving Scientist Award at the 23rd Asian-Pacific Weed Science Society Conference, September 2011, Cairns, Australia
· Young Scientist Award in 2009 by Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) for the ecological and phytochemical researches on Aconitum naviculare, an endangered Himalayan endemic medicinal plant.
· Krishna Chandra Regmi Award for thesis being adjudged the best among the post graduate level thesis of the year 2000/01 submitted to Tribhuvan University
